R3's Learn to Run program is officially complete, and we are thrilled to see how our members have fully embraced running as a new part of their outdoor exercise routine. Our coaching team wanted to bring you some tricks and hacks to bring your running game to the next level!

Fave app: I use Samsung Health. I have a Samsung mobile phone and the Samsung Watch...and the app - it all syncs together so nicely!

My favourite running or walking equipment are my wireless Beats headphones and my new fanny pack by Rhino Valley. It is lightweight, compact and adjustable. It has clear plastic on the front so you can see and use your phone while it’s in the pouch. It also has a place for the cord from your headphones, if they’re not wireless, as well as an extra pocket for keys, cash or cards.

Fave app: The 'Map My Walk' App by Under Armour can track your routes and links to MyFitnessPal as well.

Running essentials: Edmondo Running App, Dollar store fanny pack/phone holder, Bose wireless earphones, Spotify Playlist "Christian Dance Party."

3 tips on what to look for in comfortable and durable running shoes:

1) Ankle collar: Make sure you feel comfortable with the level of padding on the ankle to ensure your foot doesn't slip out of the shoe. Some padding may be too thick and irritate your Achilles tendon.

2) Sole: Look for a decent amount of grip or traction on the shoe. If the sole is too stiff or heavy, it may not be comfortable to run in.

3) Size matters: Squeezing your foot into an undersized shoe and doing a 5km run is a recipe for blisters and aches! Remember, your feet will tend to spread as you run, so make sure you have one thumb-width of cushion space between your foot and shoe. If your shoes feel like they're pinching you...time to upsize.

Shoe design really does make a difference. Don't believe us? Check out this short documentary, published by the Wall Street Journal this January, about the controversy behind whether Nike's new Vaporfly Running Shoe gives marathon runners a leg up in a race.
